learned today that dorner sent me a package to my office here in cnn in new york. the package arrived on february 1st. i receive a lot of strange packages and letters and we have a system in place for dealing with them. i did not personally see this package or know about it until today. the package contained a dvd and a bullet-riddled keepsake coin called the challenge coin. it's nomhis former boss, william bradden, who joins me shortly to talk about it. that coin had three bullet holes in the center, as you can see. and one partial hole on its edge, on the upper right-hand corner of the coin. we're going to show you more of the contents of that package in a moment. in addition, we're going to talk to a veteran crime reporter about ways of stopping a revenge killer, and chris lawrence on the type of sniper training the suspect has. but we begin with randi kaye. >> we're under attack. that was the word from one california police lieutenant after at least three officers were shot early thursday morning. one officer died. police say the shooter is this man, 33-year-old christopher jordan

. cnn's susan candiotti made her way to boston, the flurries are flying. susan, i see you, hang on. i want to go first to alison kosik in new york. alison, we remember the disastrous situation you had, two winters ago in new york, the great big city essentially shut down. is that the type of scenario, alison, we're looking at here? is that the fear today, right now, in new york? >> reporter: people are talking about that. that monster storm of 2010, back in december. that was a biggie. that was when 20 inches fell in new york city. the big problem with that one, though, is new york city wasn't prepared for it. even the mayor back then said they didn't react as they should because they didn't get the plows out ahead of time, they didn't warn the public ahead of time. this is a very different story because, yeah, we are expecting to get anywhere from 8 to 14 inches, something to to sneeze at, but new york city is preparing. they have 250 tons of salt ready to go. hundreds of plows ready to go. they have got sanitation workers working around the clock. they are on this. they're on this m
is continuing, and until we find some other information, we'll continue our search. >> reporter: tonight's cnn's anderson cooper revealed dorner had sent him a package. >> inside the package was a hand-labeled dvd with a yellow post-it note reading in part, "i never lie." apparently in reference to his dismissal from the lapd in 2008. >> reporter: there are indications he may have reason to be angry. i'm not an aspiring rapper. i'm not a gang member. i'm not a dope dealer, dorner writes in his manifesto. i am a man who has lost complete faith in the system when the system betrayed, slandered, and libelled me. the manic account of his firing given in that manifesto is told more soberfully court documents. in both, dorner claims the lapd fired him after he reported having witnessed his superior using a taser on a mentally ill suspect, then he said seeing the superior hand-cuff the suspect and kick him in the chest and face. the suspect, christopher gedler and his father offered testimony corroborating dorner's account at the time, but the father now says he wasn't surprised that the review board
